23 Country Classics
In 2001, the long-running Western swing collective Asleep at the Wheel released this fine collection of country tunes. Along with charming originals such as "The Letter That Johnny Walker Read, " the ensemble, led by vocalist/guitarist Ray Benson, offers up a handful of jazzy numbers by its chief inspiration, the legendary Bob Wills, including an upbeat "dance version" of "Bring It on Down to My House" and "I Wonder If You Feel the Way IDo, " which features another Wills disciple, Merle Haggard. In addition to Haggard, 23 COUNTRY CLASSICS also includes appearances by Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, and Suzy Bogguss, extending the disc's appeal beyond even Asleep at the Wheel's sizeable and devoted fanbase.
