Billboard #1s: Classic Country
Recording information: 1952 - 1988. Awide-ranging two-disc set with 30 songs, BILLBOARD #1's: CLASSIC COUNTRY is roughly evenly divided between three important eras. The traditional country of the 1950s and early '60s brings hits by PatsyCline, Johnny Cash, and Faron Young; thestrings-and-choirs school of "countrypolitan" music showcases hits by Tammy Wynette, Ray Price, and Lynn Anderson; finally, the country-pop of the Urban Cowboy school and its nearly immediate New Traditionalist backlash of the mid-1980s includes songs by Willie Nelson, Eddie Rabbit, and Randy Travis. And the non-chronological setlist nicely showcases the similarities of the twangy schools more than the differences.
